What is the significance of Washington Park? ›

Washington Square Park is named for George Washington (1732-1799), the commander of the Continental Army, who was inaugurated in New York City as the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789. The land was once a marsh fed by Minetta Brook located near an Indian village known as Sapokanikan.

Washington Park is one of the oldest parks in Portland. In 1871, the City purchased the original forty acres of land from Amos King, an early developer who bought over 500 acres of land west of the city, for $32,634.

Fees. The Park is free to enter. There is a $2/hour fee to park. There is an admission fee for the Portland Japanese Garden, World Forestry Center Discovery Museum, and Oregon Zoo.

About Washington Park

Created in the 1870s, Washington Park is the premier park in the city of Albany, New York and the centerpiece of the historic, mostly residential Washington Park Historic District, which received its designation on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Developed in the 1890s and early 1900s, Washington Park is a 160-acre recreational area just southeast of downtown Denver. Landscape architects Reinhard Schuetze and Saco DeBoer designed the park around a portion of City Ditch.

Hawthorne in Portland, United States

The park was renamed in honor of George Washington in 1881. In the 1880s, architect Daniel H. Burnham designed the limestone round stables and refectory, and in 1910 added the South Park Commission administrative headquarters (now the DuSable Museum of African-American History).

The original building was demolished around 1897; however, its foundations were rediscovered in 1930, at which time Borough President Byrne ordered its reconstruction using the original materials. The reconstruction was completed in 1934 and the building used as a park office and comfort station.

The site, which eventually grew to more than 130 acres, played an integral role in a planned citywide parks system. The park, initially known as West Park, was the location of Milwaukee's first zoo from 1892 until 1958. In 1900, the park's name was changed to Washington Park.
