Guide: Wedding guest outfit for weddings of all kinds and at any time of year

Once you get to a certain age, wedding invitations start to arrive more and more often. These very special celebrations are of course a wonderful opportunity to finally dress up again. The only problem: Often you just don't know what to wear. The men of creation have it relatively easy and usually just slip into a suit. For women, things are more difficult. In addition, there are all sorts of rules that circulate online and cause additional confusion. Is a red dress at a wedding okay or not? And how do I style myself elegantly, individually and yet not steal the show from the bride? This post answers all of these questions and is also dedicated to gorgeous wedding guest outfits for different types of weddings and for every season.

Wedding guest outfit: The rules & no-gos

Anyone who has been invited to a wedding should definitely follow a few rules and no-gos when choosing an outfit.

These colors are taboo for your wedding guest outfit:

  • White and generally very light colors such as cream and beige are absolutely taboo unless a white outfit was expressly requested or permitted by the bride or bride and groom. See which colors are better in the next section.
  • The color red is also considered taboo for wedding guests; it is reserved exclusively for the mother-in-law if you want to follow common rules. After all, a red dress definitely attracts attention. If you still really want to wear a red outfit, it's best to get the bride's permission. Better: Go for delicate nuances from the same color family, such as coral.
  • Even the color black was considered a no-go at weddings for a long time, as it is actually the color of mourning. Nowadays, however, things are viewed a little more loosely. Basically, I still recommend choosing something more colorful.
  • Stay away from patterns like leopard – it looks too sexy and doesn’t suit weddings – unless that’s the themeSafari. 😉

Very important: read the invitation and observe the dress code!

Wedding Guest Outfit: The Ultimate Style Guide (2)

Of course, reading the invitation correctly should be a given. You may also receive information about dress codes etc.

  • If there is a theme or dress code for the wedding, stick to it. Of course, you don't necessarily have to buy a new outfit just for the celebration, especially at weddings of distant relatives or acquaintances. But at least try to hit the mark with what you have and some matching accessories.
  • Cuts that are too short and/or provocative are generally not suitable for weddings. Unless the motto is “60s style,” for example, then a mini dress is of course completely fine.

Consider the location and type of wedding

Wedding Guest Outfit: The Ultimate Style Guide (3)

The location and type of wedding (civil, private, church) play a major role in choosing the outfit. Therefore, be sure to inform yourself about this in advance.

  • For church weddings, you should definitely make sure to cover your shoulders during the ceremony. This works best on warm days with a stole or a pretty scarf. On cooler days, a suitable jacket is ideal. By the way: It is often cool in churches even in summer, so a jacket or stole is recommended here anyway.
  • If the wedding is being organized as a garden party, your outfit can look a little more relaxed and casual. Maxi dresses are a wonderful choice here! A castle or ballroom, on the other hand, requires more glamorous styling.
  • If the civil wedding takes place in the morning and the celebrations continue into the night, it may make sense to change. If you don't have the opportunity, you can at least pimp up your outfit for the evening with higher shoes, a sparkling handbag and great hair accessories.

Better to be overdressed than underdressed for the wedding reception

Wedding Guest Outfit: The Ultimate Style Guide (4)

If in doubt, apply a little thicker at weddings! Of course, too casual, i.e. jeans and the like, is not an option at weddings - unless of course, that's the motto. But even with statements like “casual,” respect for the bride and groom requires that they put effort into styling.

What to wear to the wedding? This way you are always well dressed

After so many rules and no-gos, we're finally getting to the colors and cuts we can wear at weddings. That's still a lot.

These colors are perfect for your wedding guest outfit

Wedding Guest Outfit: The Ultimate Style Guide (5)

Stay away from shades that are too strong and bright. The following colors, on the other hand, are perfect for wedding guests:

  • Pink (not too light)
  • All shades from light blue to dark blue
  • Lila
  • Gelb
  • Green
  • Gold for very glamorous weddings & evening celebrations

Especially in spring, I recommend pastel colors such as pink, light blue and light green. In summer and autumn things can get a little busier. How about a rich green or a strong blue? Gold is reserved for very glamorous evening celebrations.

Skirt, dress or trousers? This is how you enchant in your wedding guest outfit

Wedding Guest Outfit: The Ultimate Style Guide (7)

Whoever has the choice is spoiled for choice. So what is best for weddings? A dress, a combination of skirt and top or maybe trousers? Here's a little guide:

  • Basically, a woman can't go wrong with a dress at a wedding. Narrow dresses can appear a bit stricter and are therefore ideal for formal weddings.
  • A nice combination of skirt and a non-formal blouse or a nice top also looks great. But make sure not to wear your formal office outfit and instead go for delicate colors and beautiful patterns.
  • Wide-cut Marlene trousers made of a beautiful fabric together with a pretty top are a wonderful alternative to a dress and skirt.
  • If you like something unusual and fashionable, you can also wear an elegant jumpsuit! This is something different and still looks chic. You can find chic jumpsuits, for exampleTopVintage*.

Inspiration for your wedding guest outfit for spring, summer, autumn & winter

Spring wedding guest outfits

Flowers, delicate fabrics and pastel colors – spring gives wedding guests a great choice of outfits and dresses. However, this time of year also has a few pitfalls, after all, it is often still cool in spring and can sometimes even snow. Here are a few outfit recommendations.

For cooler months: Delicate coat as an alternative to a dress

Perfect for cool spring days: a thin, elegant coat as an alternative to a dress. This way you don't have to freeze and you have a really great, unusual outfit for a spring wedding. A trench coat in a spring-like color also looks wonderful over a delicate dress.

Fall wedding guest outfits

Even in autumn it can still be wonderfully warm and sunny. On such golden days, you can take a cue from the wedding guest outfits for spring and summer and simply take a delicate jacket and a pair of tights with you. Things get more complicated on cold, wet autumn days. But there are stylish solutions for this too.

Perfect for fall: Long sleeves & a fascinator

Wedding Guest Outfit: The Ultimate Style Guide (21)

On cold days, if possible, choose a dress with long or at least three-quarter length sleeves. This means you don't have to freeze or carry a jacket around with you all the time. You can't go wrong with dark blue or green here. My tip: If the dress isn't quite as elegant, a fascinator ensures that no one notices. 😉

Formal & elegant: wedding guest outfit for a church wedding

Wedding Guest Outfit: The Ultimate Style Guide (31)

As previously mentioned, it is recommended that shoulders be covered during church weddings. Since this type of wedding usually has a relatively formal setting, I recommend fine fabrics such as silk, satin or brocade. When it comes to cut and pattern, restraint is required.
